Free Virtual Keyboard is an excellent aid for those who cannot use a standard computer keyboard, or for those who want to make the most of their touchscreen. It displays a standard qwerty keyboard with or without some extra set of keys, such as the function keys or the arrow keys.
You can choose among various color combinations and keyboard configurations. Thus, you can change the default “blue on gray” to a high-contrast “black on white”, or to a “white on black” keyboard layout that will easily stand out from the windows around it. Though the keyboard that first appears on the screen is certainly tiny – especially if it is a touchscreen you want to use it with – it is easily resizable just by pulling from one of its corners.
The basic keyboard provided includes all the character keys of a standard qwerty configuration plus the basic modifier keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt, etc.) and the Win key. Another option is to add to this basic layout the twelve function keys, which will also add a Del key to the keyboard. Finally, the third configuration adds to all these an extra keypad with the four cursor keys.
It is worth noting that, when active, your virtual keyboard will take precedence over your mechanical keyboard. This means that if you leave the Shift key pressed in your virtual keyboard, this modifier key will also be active in your mechanical keyboard, in case you like using both alternatively.
